About the College
Established in 2013, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Guizhou University builds on academic foundations dating back to 1993 through its predecessor departments in architecture, civil engineering, and urban–rural planning. These include the former Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban and Rural Planning within Guizhou University’s School of Civil and Architectural Engineering (2004–2013), the Department of Architecture of the former Guizhou University of Technology (1993–2004), and Guizhou University’s Department of Civil Engineering (1999–2004). Today, the College offers two undergraduate programs—Architecture and Urban & Rural Planning—as well as master’s programs in Urban & Rural Planning and Landscape Architecture (Planning and Design).
The College serves approximately 600 undergraduate and 110 graduate students. Its team of 70 faculty and staff includes 8 professors and 22 associate professors. The College is home to several provincially recognized educators and experts, including 3 Consult Experts Appointed by the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee, 1 awardee of the “Hundred-Level” High-Level Innovative Talent Program, and 3 recipients of the Guizhou Provincial “Golden Teacher” (Teaching Excellence) Award. At the national level, the College features distinguished honorees such as a Baosteel Outstanding Teacher and a Model Contributor to the national Culture, Science, Technology, and Health Campaign. In addition, the College has a strong cohort of certified professionals, including 13 National First-Class Registered Architects, 9 Registered Urban Planners, and 2 Certified Cultural Heritage Conservation Engineers.
Party Building and Ideological Education
Grounded in national priorities such as new urbanization, rural revitalization, and ecological civilization, the College integrates ideological education with experiential learning and regional development. This approach strengthens a coordinated system of discipline development, talent cultivation, and industry–university–research collaboration.
The Party Branch of the Urban and Rural Planning Program has been recognized as a primary cultivation unit for the “National Model Party Branch,” selected for the national “Stronger Nation Initiative” for university Party branch secretaries, and awarded several honors, including designation as a Guizhou Provincial Standardized Party Branch Demonstration Site and recognition as an Advanced Grassroots Party Branch by the Provincial Department of Education.
Research Excellence
The College hosts several research centers, including the Guizhou Provincial Research Center for Mountainous Human Settlements and Green Intelligent Construction, the Guizhou University Center for Urban and Architectural Heritage Conservation, the Guizhou Workstation of the Research Base for the Visual Image of the Chinese Nation at Southeast University, and the Guizhou Sub-center of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Urban and Architectural Heritage Conservation. Over the past five years, faculty have secured more than 10 National Natural Science Foundation projects and over 20 provincial-level grants. In addition, the College has received two Guizhou Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Prize) and one Innovation Achievement Award from the China Industry–University–Research Cooperation Promotion Association.
Undergraduate Education
The College emphasizes comprehensive training, design innovation, hands-on learning, and a strong regional identity. Both undergraduate majors passed national accreditation in 2018 and 2019, respectively, with Architecture designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program. Four courses have been recognized as national first-class courses. Faculty and students have achieved strong results in national and provincial teaching competitions, reinforcing the College’s reputation for high-quality architectural and planning education.
Building on the national “Double First-Class Undergraduate Programs and Courses” initiative, the College has, over the past five years, received one Guizhou Provincial Special Prize for Teaching Achievements, two First Prizes, two national virtual simulation laboratory case-team awards, three Second Prizes in the National Higher Education Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition, two First Prizes and two Second Prizes in the corresponding Guizhou provincial competition, and has developed 15 provincial-level “golden courses.”
Graduate Education
The College offers a master’s degree program in Urban and Rural Planning (first-level discipline) and a professional master’s degree in Landscape Architecture (Landscape Planning and Design specialization). In the 2024 Shanghai Ranking of Best Disciplines in China, Urban and Rural Planning ranked 23rd nationwide, placing it within the top 30%. Research areas align with both disciplinary frontiers and Guizhou’s urban–rural development needs, including history and heritage conservation, planning and design methodologies, urban–rural systems and planning technologies, traditional village conservation in Southwest ethnic minority regions, regional architectural innovation, green architecture, and vernacular architecture.
Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Social Engagement
The College encourages innovation and practical engagement through partnerships with government and industry. Notable achievements include two Special Prizes, one First Prize, and four Second Prizes in the “Challenge Cup” National University Student Science and Technology Competition, as well as one Silver Award and one Bronze Award in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition. Focusing on the effective alignment of poverty alleviation achievements with rural revitalization, the College developed the case “Planning-Led Development: Drawing a New Blueprint for Beautiful Villages in Guizhou’s Mountains and Waters,” which was selected by the Ministry of Education as a Model Project for Targeted Support by Provincial Universities.
